Please read further to find out which 2 techniques i have used in this Rainbow nails
I used be very fond of glass painting when i was learning crafts and paintings in school. Taking inspiration from this stained glass painting image, I have designed today’s Rainbow nails. Following is pictorial on how i did my Rainbow nails / stained glass nails with 3D outlines.
Black Nail polish: Ambika Pillai Hard Candy 17
Top Coat : Rimmel London Pro 5 in 1
Stamping plates: Moyou London, Pro Collection 03 and Mash -20
Konad White stamping polish.
DIY sheer polishes in rainbow colors.
Step 1 : Base Nail Polish
I applied Ambika Pillai Hard candy 17, as my base nail polish. It has velvet matte finish. This is why it is my favorite black nail polish.
Step 2 : Stamping the Stained Glass Design
I stamped the design on my first and last finger, using Moyou London Pro Collection -03. Used konad white stamping polish. This design is actually one of the animal print design but i found it perfect for my stained glass design i wanted
This design was perfect for how I imagined my stained glass design to look. But i wanted little larger blocks too. I found one more similar design on Mash stamping plates. It had larger blocks than Moyou Plate. Exactly as I was looking for.
I stamped my ring finger with Mash stamping plate – 20. I also stamped a rainbow design on middle finger. The rainbow design is from Mash stamping plate 22. I stamped it using Konad White stamping polish.
Step 3: Stained Glass Color Fill – Using Lead Light Technique
I created my own sheer tint polishes using clear polish and rainbow colors nail polishes. With the help of a detailing brush, filled in colors one by one over the white stamped designs. Once the colors were dry, applied a top coat. This technique is also known as Lead Light technique. Where we fill the colors on stamping base using sheer polishes. For this step we can use water color or acrylic paints too. The finished design after this step looked like this:
The design at this stage looks very pretty too. I could have finished here but i planned something further
Step 4: 3D outline / Embossed outline
We use a 3D outliner to create our glass painting design. Similarly, I have created 3D outlines / embossed outlines to my stained glass nails using sugar spun nail art technique. In Sugar spun nail art technique, we make a swatch of polish gloppy. Then apply them on nails as series of strings using a toothpick.
Similarly, I took a small amount of black nail polish on a foil paper. Let it dry for 2-3 minutes. When it was gloppy and not completely dry, i started taking small strings with the help of toothpick. Placed the strings over the black outlines, creating an embossed / 3D effect.
Please note, we do not want it to get too gloppy or too runny. If too runny, it will sit flat and spread over the colors. Too gloppy will not give smooth strings and leave dragging marks. Since my polish was already gloppy, I let it dry for 2-3 minutes only. If your polish is too runny, you may have to wait for few more minutes. To know what is right consistency refer above image. It must create strings like the one in above image – smooth yet bonded.
